Pauli J Hayes has been with Environmental Health Sciences as managing editor since 2006. She oversees the work of Environmental Health News' senior editors, senior researchers, office manager and several dozen web researchers who work part-time in locations coast-to-coast. She works closely with the publisher, and with the editor-in-chief, climate editor and science writer as copy editor, and assists with the journalism intern program. She is also a member of the morning senior editor team.

She has worked for 30 years in journalism, public relations and science communication, beginning as a reporter at the award-winning Aspen Times weekly newspaper in her native town of Aspen, Colo, and subsequently as features editor at the Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg, Vir. She spent the next decade working respectively as university newspaper editor, assistant director of media relations, and university website content director at James Madison University. Before assuming her current position with EHS, she led the communications program for the Virginia Graduate Marine Science Consortium (Virginia Sea Grant) for six years.

Hayes holds a bachelor's degree from the cutting-edge media arts and design program at JMU, where she also did graduate work in education and in technical writing and editing.

She lives in rural Fluvanna County with her partner and numerous animals. She is an avid organic gardener, and her interest in chemical-free products has inspired her to create an experimental line of hand-made natural skin care potions and soap.
